It's boom time for hair oil currently, with an assortment of different products on the beauty shelves that cater for every budget and hair type.

Although being spoilt for choice can be a good thing, Jock Robson from Dharma Hairdressing in Mt Eden gives us his take on the hair-rising phenomena.

HAIR OIL SEEMS TO BE THE LATEST BEAUTY CRAZE, WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY DESIGNED TO DO?

Hair oils are used to combat the effects of humidity on the hair shaft. They are designed to smooth the hair cuticle, promote shine, restore moisture balance and deliver healthy hair.

CAN ANY HAIR TYPE USE IT?

Yes, with a huge array of hair oils on the market you will be able to find one that suits your hair type. My favourite hair oil is Redken All Soft Argan-6, which dramatically improves the texture of all hair types, especially dry, brittle hair.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE APPLYING IT TO MY HAIR AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Hair oil should be applied on the day of washing your hair as it takes away some of that "over-clean" texture that occurs. Spot application the day after washing works wonders where needed. Benefits include greater moisture retention, flyaway control, shine, faster drying time and heat protection.

YOUR TOP HAIR OIL TIP?

For a lazy summer look, apply the oil to damp hair, either plait or knot the hair and leave until dry. Once dry, release the hair and finger comb into place reapplying a small amount of hair oil as you go.
