Setting the words of the legendary Woody Guthrie to contemporary alt-country music, this quartet - Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo), Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline) and Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket) - has produced a beautiful, low-key tribute.
And you'll be hooked from the first twang. Opening track HopingMachine - which you'd almost swear has Don McGlashan on vocals - bathes you in warmth as its harmonies wash over you, Careless Reckless Love is a heartbreaking, heartfelt lament, while VD City brings a touch of Springsteen/Mellencamp to proceedings.
There's a good mix of styles and tempos to keep things interesting, but all the while the album retains its rustic Americana vibe.
