Anyone with an iTunes voucher or similar left over from Christmas could do worse than check out John Newman's debut album.

Tribute is perfect summer driving music, uplifting and emotional and bound to have you singing along at the top of your voice.

It's Newman's voice - aching with a vulnerability that matches the lyrics of love and loss - that hits the mark and makes you feel his pain and euphoria simultaneously.

You may have heard him on Rudimental's hit Feel The Love, or his own lead single Love Me Again, pumping with the swing and swagger of this generation of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Jessie Ware, Adele, Plan B, Duffy and Joss Stone who look(ed) to the past for their sound and style.

That song's a standout, but one of many. Check out Losing Sleep, Try, Cheating, Running or the fantastic opening and title track in which Newman pays tribute to his musical heroes.

The album closes with what may be its best track - All I Need Is You - another epic strings-filled anthem with strong backing vocals over a thumpy piano bass. By the time you get to the end of this one you'll be breathless.
