This is the sixth studio album from Bradford Cox and co, and it's a goodie. Atlanta band Deerhunter are one of the most exciting acts in modern rock, their music a strange amalgam of your favourite alt-indie bands.
Unfriendly, raucous noises and distorted vocals are tempered by friendly melodies, mostnoticeably on the Pixies-ish Leather Jacket II and Monomania, while album opener Neon Junkyard, which features warm, strumming guitars, is like The Hollies doing a Flying Nun track. Pensacola is an early Stones-like blues rocker.
Elsewhere you'll hear elements of Sonic Youth or The Dead C, while there's a strong nod to 90s shoegaze indie pop on songs like The Missing, which rocks out like a Stone Roses number. There's a lot of noise going on here, but that's why Monomania is so good. And if you like it, check out the last one, Halcyon Digest.
