Police were called to a fire at a Whakamarama property following reports of an explosion overnight.

A police media communications spokeswoman said police were called to a fire on Esdaile Rd about 8.50pm yesterday.

"It appears the fire was in a pit on private property and an explosion occurred," the spokeswoman said.

No one was reported to have been injured.
