Girl in serious condition after being struck by car near Paihia

A 12-year-old girl is in Whangarei Hospital after she was struck by a car at Te Haumi, near Paihia, this morning.

She was crossing SH11 at the bridge at the southern end of Te Haumi about 7am when she was hit.

She suffered head injuries and was in a serious condition when taken to Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa and from there to Whangarei.

Traffic was down to one lane while the police Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.

The road has now reopened.
