Labour Weekend is the unofficial start of summer in Northland, but the sun won't beam down much this long weekend.
MetService is forecasting intermittent showers on Saturday and Sunday and rain on Monday when state highways are expected to be busy with holidaymakers returning home.
It has been unusually cold the past few days but temperatures are expected to hover around 18C and 19C during the day, dropping down to about 13C overnight.
MetService weather forecaster Claire Flynn said Saturday would be partly cloudy with a few showers in the afternoon and evening as a result of a weak front.
Showers are likely to clear on Sunday morning. A front moving across Northland on Monday will bring rain with little wind.
Rain is expected to turn to showers on Tuesday, and Wednesday should be a fine day.
"It won't be the worst of the weather (across the coutnry). I am sure people will find things to do this weekend," Ms Flynn said.
MetService is not expecting broad-scale severe weather from tomorrow until Sunday.
