Tauranga Hospital is investigating why one of its lifts malfunctioned, trapping two people inside.

Just after 1am on Friday the lift connecting the Clarke St car park to the main entrance of the hospital developed a fault, hospital property services site engineer Shelton Hooper said.

Hospital staff came to help, along with a technician from the service provider for the lift.

Meanwhile, the two people in the lift contacted the fire service.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Neil Brown said firefighters helped bring the lift to ground level and get the trapped people out.

Mr Hooper said the cause of the lift fault was being investigated.

"The lift remains out of action whilst investigations and repairs are carried out. In the meantime, a shuttle service is operating between the Clarke St car park and the hospital.

"We regret any distress or inconvenience caused for the two people who were in the lift at the time it stopped working," Mr Hooper said.
