Police will the vehicle which was involved in a police pursuit lasting about 30 minutes. It was finally stopped at the intersection with Kamo Rd and Western Hills Dr after being spiked.

A man is being treated for dog bites after a police pursuit and attempted carjacking in Whangarei today.

Acting Whangarei area commander Inspector Al Symonds said police were called to Paramount Parade in Tikipunga about 2pm.

It's alleged a man was seen pulling a woman out of her vehicle at the shopping centre before he drove off. As police arrived at the scene they spotted the car leaving and a pursuit began, Symonds said.

The pursuit, lasted about 30 minutes. It went through Kamo, along Three Mile Bush Rd into Church Rd and onto Pipiwai Rd where it was spiked.

However, the vehicle continued onto Kamo Rd towards Whangarei before stopping near Whau Valley.

The driver ran off from the car and was then chased by a police dog and handler.

Symonds said the man would be medically assessed before he was formally interviewed by officers.
