A logging truck which rolled and crashed into a ditch on State Highway 36 has prompted the closure of the Tauranga to Rotorua route as emergency services worked to clear the scene.

Emergency services were called at 2.27pm after a truck rolled on the main highway between Taumata and Mangatoi Rds today.

The driver was unhurt and despite logs spilling onto the road, closing one lane, traffic was still flowing during the emergency, Senior Constable Tim Shields said.

Mr Shields said police expected to close the main highway completely about 4.30pm to allow a crane to help in the recovery of the truck, which currently remains in the ditch.

Yet, a police media communications spokeswoman said the road was opened again just after 4pm.
