A 4km offal spill between Kaiwaka and Wellsford blocked a portion of State Highway 1 and caused significant delays

Clean-up of a 4km offal spill between Kaiwaka and Wellsford was ongoing yesterday afternoon.
The spill, which happened about 6pm on Monday, blocked a portion of State Highway 1 with diversions put in place. Police advised motorists to expect "significant" delays.
Yesterday afternoon, traffic was flowingin both directions, but there was a 50km/h speed restriction throughout the spill site, as the NZTA had laid loose chip to make the area less slippery.
Contractors were finishing the clean-up late yesterday. There was no explanation as yet as to how the spill occurred.
