Police are investigating a suspicious car fire in Gate Pa, Tauranga, overnight after firefighters suspect arson. Photo/file

Tauranga police are investigating a car doused in petrol and set alight on someone's property overnight.

Firefighters were called to the incident in Gate Pa about 10pm.

Greerton fire brigade station officer Bill Rackham said the fire happened at a private residence and police were called as it appeared to have been deliberatly lit.

Mr Rackham said there appeared to be an accelerant like petrol doused over and around the Holden Commodore.

Police were now investigating the matter, Mr Rackham said.

Police could not be reached for comment this morning.
