A van on fire in the Kaimai Ranges has spread into nearby vegetation as emergency services warn motorists to take extra care.

Tauranga firefighters are responding to the fire, near Soldiers Rd on State Highway 29.

Northern communications shift manager Scott Osborne said "the fire has spread into scrub going up into an embankment and spreading into trees".
