A one-year-old Opotiki boy remains in a critical condition at Auckland's Starship Hospital after falling from a Tauranga deck.

The baby suffered head injuries and was assessed in Tauranga Hospital and flown to Starship at 11pm last night by the Tauranga-based TECT Trustpower Rescue Helicopter piloted by Liam Brettkelly.

Mr Brettkelly understood that the boy fell 1.5m to 2m onto debris below the deck about 8pm. "It was not a soft landing."

Authorities assumed the boy's family were visiting family or friends. There was a large number of people at the address when the accident happened.

It was the second time in nearly two years that a Tauranga toddler has been taken to Starship Hospital after a fall at home.
