The Kaitaia Amateur Swimming Club (KASC) reported it had been a stellar summer season with 157 individuals on the books this year, ranging in age from 4 to 18, which ensured the organisation remained the biggest club in Northland.

The club celebrated its ongoing popularity and positive impact within the local community by holding its annual prizegiving awards ceremony at the town pools on March 25. There, president Lynette Murray thanked all who had been part of this year's success, and on the club's behalf, thanked the 16 volunteer instructors who gave up their time and expertise over the summer to teach their young charges.

In other news, the club noted that having reluctantly been forced to turn away many families wanting their children to learn to swim in past years, it has now begun campaigning to make the dream of having an indoor heated aquatic centre in Kaitaia a reality. To this end, the greater community was being encouraged to get behind the Te Hiku Community Aquatic and Recreational Centre Workgroup. Before the submissions to council closed yesterday, some of the club members were seen in the Pak'nSave foyer on Saturday handing out submissions, draft plans and reasons why Kaitaia township needed an indoor pool facility.

Intermediate success

The Kaitaia Intermediate School was represented with distinction by several students at the recent 2013 Far North Schools Zone Swimming Championships which were held at the Kaitaia town pool earlier this year.

The intermediate thanked Sharon Patrick and her group of volunteers from Kaitaia Primary School who did a wonderful job organising the day's events, and congratulated its own students who made the top three in their age groups and who were as follows.

Butterfly, boys: Harry Larkin 1 (i.e. first place), girls: Tashana Pure 1, Nalani Waenga Karena 2, Denique Maxwell Jones 4.
