Northland lifters lifted with distinction at the National Powerlifting Championships in Christchurch from August 6-9 and the following results were recorded...

WOMEN. Equipped 47kg class: Trish Muldrock (Kaikohe) squat 105kg, benchpress 67.5kg, deadlift 132.5kg, total 305kg, 1st overall; all four weights were NZ and Northland master 60+ records). Unequipped 63kg sub junior class: Elisha Swainson (Whangarei) squat 75kg, benchpress 50kg, deadlift 110kg, total 235kg; all weights were Northland open and junior record except deadlift, Northland junior record.

MEN. Unequipped 66kg junior class: Kane McKenzie (Whangarei) squat 172kg (NZ, Northland open and junior record), benchpress 102.5kg, deadlift 205.5kg, total 480kg (latter two weights both NZ junior records) and placing 2nd in the open and 1st junior.

Unequipped 83kg junior class: Dean Price (Kerikeri) squat 210kg, benchpress 160kg, deadlift 230kg, total 600kg, 3rd; all Northland open and junior records. Unequipped 105kg junior class: Leethan Tau (Kerikeri) squat 180kg, benchpress 125kg (Northland junior record), deadlift 240kg (Northland open and junior record), total 545kg (Northland junior record), 4th. Unequipped 120kg class: Joseph Whittaker (Whangarei) squat 280kg , benchpress 206kg (NZ record), deadlift 300kg, total 786kg, 1st; with all weights being Northland open records.

The high standard continued at the Northland Bench Press Championships in Dargaville on Saturday (August 16) with six Northland records smashed.

Results were as follows.

WOMEN. 47kg class: T Muldrock (Kaikohe) 60kg (Northland master 60+ record), 1st. 63kg class: Tracey Thompson (Dargaville) 42.5kg, 1st. 72kg: Janne Barrett (Whangarei) 50kg (Northland master 60+ record), 1st. 84kg+: Taari Murray (Kaitaia) 117.5kg (Northland open and master 40+ record), 1st, Katrina Barrett (Whangarei) 80kg, 2nd.

MEN: 74kg: Brian Froggatt (Dargaville) 132.5kg, 1st, Lyle Cardy (Auckland) 100kg, 2nd, Ming Ming Edgar (Dargaville) 90kg, 3rd.

83kg: Ricardo Taylor (Kaitaia) 125kg, 1st; Liam O'Connor (Kaitaia) 105kg. 93kg: Richard Ayton (Kerikeri) 120kg, 1st. 105kg: Stan Day (Kaitaia) 172.5kg (Northland open and master 40+ record) 1st, Chris Blair (Whangarei) 162.5kg, 2nd, Andrew Penny (Kerikeri) 135kg, 3rd, Nigel Church (Kerikeri) 152.5kg, 4th. 120kg: Leon O'Connor (Kaitaia) 175kg, 1st. 120+kg: Joseph Whittaker (Whangarei) 202.5kg (Northland open record) 1st, Mark Osborne (Kaitaia) 175kg (Northland master 40+ record), 2nd.

COMING UP: A number of local powerlifters were wished good luck at the NZ Bench Press championships in Auckland on September 27 (all Northlanders who competed at the Northland benchpress champs have qualified). As well, Trish Muldrock will be representing her province and country at the World Masters Powerlifting Champs in Plzen, Czech from September 29 to October 7; while those who have qualified for the Asia Oceania Powerlifting and Bench Press Champs in Melbourne from December 7-14 were reminded applications to compete need to be in by September 13.
