PM Jacinda Ardern tells Kaeo School pupils in the Far North wait is almost over for baby

Primary students in a tiny rural town will be grinning from ear to ear after receiving a letter from the Prime Minister.

When Room 4 at Kaeo Primary School, in the Far North, heard the good news that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was having a baby they decided to congratulate her. The students wrote her a letter and sent her a pukeko soft toy for the baby.

Ardern wrote back thanking the students for their sweet sentiments. The school posted the letter to Facebook yesterday.

"I absolutely loved visiting your school last year, and am so touched the you have drawn such wonderful pictures and written such lovely notes for me! I know Clarke will love them too, when I show him.

"Some of you asked if the baby is a boy or a girl. It's not too long now until the baby will arrive and you'll find out! Either way, I'm sure the baby will really enjoy the pukeko, so thanks again!"

Ardern discovered she was pregnant just six days before she became Prime Minister-elect.

Ardern shared the delightful news on social media saying that she was excited about the pregnancy.

"And we thought 2017 was a big year! Clarke and I are really excited that in June our team will expand from two to three," she wrote on Instagram.

"I think it's fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn't be more excited," she wrote.

She said although there would be "lots of questions" she and her partner had a plan all ready to go.

Ardern had to have secret after-hour appointments with her GP before announcing she was pregnant.

The baby is due in June.
