One person has died after the car they were driving hit a power pole in Waipapakauri, Northland.

A police spokeswoman said they were called to a serious crash on Far North Rd at 8.04pm.

One person had suffered serious injuries and had deteriorated into a serious condition, she said.

The patient had since died.

Contractors had been contacted and the Serious Crash Unit was attending, the spokeswoman said.

Far North Road was also closed as a result of the crash.
