School events positive

With much happening around us that invites negative comment I would like to focus on two excellent recent events at Kaitaia College. The first is the Academic Counselling Day for senior students - a fairly new initiative. I was made aware of it when my daughter, who is new to the school, brought home a letter advising me of the day, and requesting that we both attend an appointment with her house group teacher.

Attached was a letter from the acting principal for me to take to my employer explaining the importance of the Academic Counselling Day and seeking their cooperation in allowing me time from work to be present. I think the college should be applauded for this holistic approach which not only involves the student, parents/ caregivers and school, but also the wider community.

At the meeting the current NCEA system was explained to us. We went through my daughter's NCEA results and achievements from last year, her subject achievements to date and projected results for the end of year, her intended career path in nursing and subject and achievement requirements for Year 13, helpful suggestions for pursuing scholarships, and names of local people and organisations in the health sector she could contact for more advice.

Her house group teacher was well informed by the subject teachers and, coupled with her understanding of my daughter's overall achievements and aspirations, we welcomed her input.

This was all conducted in a relaxed atmosphere where we were not conscious of time constraints and all parties felt able to discuss any other issues that arose. The house group teacher is often responsible for the student's pastoral care while at school and I appreciated the opportunity to communicate freely and share ideas in a collaborative approach to my daughter's future.

The second event was the Kaitaia College Talent Quest. What an awesome, well organised, entertaining evening, so thank you all staff and students involved in showcasing such an amazing breadth of talent. Congratulations Atarangi Heta who won with her rendition of 'Zombie.' It was spine chilling - what a voice.
