A talented Far North golfer is helping introduce other students to the sport, while building his own promising golf career.
Ōkaihau College Year 8 student Javier Rogers-Pou recently ran a workshop for Kaikohe Christian School students, sharing his golfing knowledge and teaching them skills.
The day began with a show-and-tellsession, where Javier spoke about golf rules, answered questions and shared some of the products he makes that help fund his golfing journey.
The group then headed to the Kaikohe Golf Course where Javier spent several hours teaching the students golfing techniques.
She said he was naturally shy and initially nervous about working with students who were older than him.
“It’s really cool, we are really proud of him. Both me and his dad went along with him to give him some support. The kids were older than him and he was a bit nervous, but he managed and it was a good day.”
Javier said he thinks it’s pretty cool and teaching the other young kids may help to grow the Kaikohe golf club.
Students from Kaikohe Christian School got a golfing lesson from up-and-coming golfer Javier Rogers-Pou.
Javier also has his own small business, Paving Golf, selling golfing merchandise featuring Māori designs.
He started with scorecard holders he designed himself.
The range has expanded to include ball markers and golf gloves – and Javier is planning to add shirts and hats next.
Ōkaihau College principal Thomas Davison said the school was proud of Javier and what he has already achieved in the sport.
“He is self-motivated, self-disciplined and backed by a very supportive whānau.
“Our kura is about preparing our students to contribute to their community, so it is great to see Javier living that already. We look forward to more great things from him over the coming years.”
Emily said more workshops were being discussed. In the meantime, Javier is preparing for upcoming competitions.
