Getting through tomorrow's  match against North Harbour without his squad sustaining  fresh injuries will be high on Bryce Woodward's wishlist for Northland's opening pre-season game.
Several of Woodward's first-choice players will watch the contest from the sideline as Northland's early season injury toll continues to mount.
The normal ritual of pre-season matches
acting more like trials is set to continue - for a few fringe Northland players, at least - as they get a chance to push their cases for further inclusion in the squad.
Chief injury concerns surround the fitness problems in the loose forwards, with Kamo's Jared McKenzie called into the squad for cover.
And with captain Justin Collins still not right after a knock taken during the Super 14, another regular starter, Joel McKenty, joins him on the sideline after tweaking a hamstring at training on Saturday.
With Roy Griffin already out with an ankle sprain, Woodward will start Matt Clutterbuck in his first match for his province of origin at openside, with Junior Gandolo at blindside and Cameron Eyre at No8. Matt Harrison and McKenzie will cover those positions off the bench.
In the front row, recently signing Tim Dow has also damaged a hamstring but, while it is not serious, the coach is taking no chances and pundits will get to see Mikaele Tu'u'u in action in the hooking role after playing his club rugby for Old Boys as a loose forward.
Robbie Abel will cover the position from the bench, while Matt Wallis is the prop cover, with Bronson Murray given another week to recover from some  bruises to his shoulder and ribs.
While the ink may not have dried on the new contracts of Cameron Jowitt and Pat O'Connor, they both will be in attendance tomorrow  but neither  is expected to take the field until the next pre-season match at Pukekohe on July 24 - giving Kamo's Steve Baker the other locking position alongside Dan Goodwin.
The backline has a more settled look, with Luke Hamilton getting the nod to start at halfback ahead of Rhyan Caine, while Rene Ranger starts off the bench after his two-week stand-down winds down  following the New Zealand A tour.
Nick Collins remains an injury concern while Woodward is still looking for a first-five eighth on the loan market.
The Taniwha went into camp at Coopers Beach yesterday and will  have a light  run today in their final preparation for the match.
