For years, Simon Cauty has listened to the tale of Mid Western's 1962 triumph in the club rugby premier competition - the last time the club won the title.
This weekend, the premier coach wants to change the script.
"The story is getting a bit old ... it's been 49 years since we have won the title and I'm a little tired of hearing that story from the old fellas down at the club so hopefully we win this weekend and give them something else to talk about," Cauty said.
Tomorrow Mid Western go head to head with Mid Northern in the Southern Districts grand final, after the sides defeated Kamo and Hora Hora respectively in last weekend's semifinals.
Mid Western took out the minor premiership this season, winning all of their matches, bar one draw, and one loss which was to Mid Northern.
"That was in round 13, and they have been the form team ever since. They have an experienced forward pack with a lot of old heads who will push the rules and of course David Holwell (first five-eighths) who steers them around the park," Cauty said.
Mid Western have lost the services of wing Brook Gilmore, who is in Las Vegas competing with the New Zealand Dodgeball team.
Saxon Samuels takes the right wing role, Dan McCully moves into centre and Luke Muggeridge will fill the fullback role.
To reach the grand final in his first year coaching the side has been a great achievement, but Cauty said he has been helped immensely by Adam Clarke - who captained the side who lost to Wellsford in the 2009 grand final and who will lead his side again - as they try to go one better tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Mid Northern coach of five years Craig Edwards is hoping his side can repeat last year's grand final-winning effort over Western Sharks to make it two premiership titles in a row for the club.
"It is a big game for us but the team are all fired up, itching to get out there," Edwards said.
The coach said it was vital his team start well, and shut down Mid Western's pack and speedy backs as quickly as possible.
"And if they get the ball, we want to get it back off them as quick as possible ... We don't want to give them any room to play out wide," he said.
Both sides have plenty to play for. Mid Western have had a drought of winning premierships, while for Mid Northern's older players, it may be their last crack at winning a title, Edwards said.
"It's my fifth year coaching the side and if we win tomorrow it will be my third title ... I'm still really keen. I have good experienced players in the side, which makes my job a lot easier."
Mid Northern's reserve graders also gained a finals berth, and will play Western Sharks before the premier final.
Mid Northern have won two consecutive reserve-grade titles, and were gunning for their third.
Both teams were amped to get the second club double in a row - and supporters were getting right in behind the club, Edwards said.
"The supporters are really focused - who knows what kind of surprise they have in store for us."
Tomorrow's Southern Districts premier final kicks off at 2.30pm, while the reserve-grade final is at 12.30pm, at Toll Stadium.
Mid Western: 1 Dane Rawira, 2 Michael Danks, 3 Glyn Hoosen-Owen, 4 James Merry, 5 Regan Edwards, 6 Logan Cowan, 7 Brent Murray, 8 Ben Berridge, 9 Adam Clarke (c), 10 Dan Wells, 11 Saxon Samuels, 12 Karaitiana Vette Welsh, 13 Dan McCully, 14 Ben Mathers, 15 Luke Muggeridge. Reserves: TBC.
Mid Northern: 1 Jason Hammond, 2 Paul Scanel, 3 Dylan Horne, 4 Busta Tahere, 5 Brad Taylor, 6 Andrew Ritchie (Karran Going), 7 Clint Dodd (Andrew Ritchie), 8 Jamie McQueen, 9 Tom Fleetwood, 10 David Holwell, 11 Dallas Pearce, 12 Gray Roberts, 13 Maihi Brown (JT Thomas), 14 Jershon Witehira, 15 Brent Morgan. Reserves: TBC.
