Mid Northern continued their strong start to the Bayleys Premier Reserve competition with a convincing 44-5 victory over Otamatea.

The home side were in full control of the fixture, piling on points while being highly clinical on the defensive end.

Mid Northern coach Robert Olsen said his side looked pretty good out there but there was always room to get better.

"We did the basics pretty well throughout but we made some silly mistakes in the match - mainly loose passes in the backs. That's the kind of thing we need to work on at training," he said.

"Otamatea pushed us around pretty well. They battled right until the end.

"Our front rowers put in a full 80 and Daniel Potter at halfback had a great game. The backline's defence was really good but we let ourselves down with some loose passes and the like."

Mid Northern showed they are going to be one of the teams to beat this season and built well off their win over Old Boys Marist last week.

They are one of only three unbeaten teams after two weeks of play - Waipu and Kamo are also two from two.

Olsen said while it was good to be unbeaten, their focus was on the short term.

"We're taking it all week by week and continuing to work on the little things at training," he said.

"We've got a long season ahead so we can't get too far ahead of ourselves. We had a good win last week but we can't be looking too far forward."

Meanwhile Waipu added their second win of the season with a 62-0 drubbing of Mid Western, giving them their second heavy defeat in a row.

Waipu, much like Mid Northern and Kamo, are looking dangerous in the early stages of the competition.

Kamo continued their strong defensive form with a 28-13 win over Western Sharks. Kamo are the top defensive team in the competition so far.

OBM got their season back on track with a highly entertaining 43-34 away win over Hora Hora. Both sides showed the quality of their attacking games with conditions good underfoot.

The final match saw Hikurangi register their first win of 2017 with a 28-0 shut out against Wellsford.
