Sibling rivalry between Max and Finn Trimble escalated to another level during the Northland Secondary Schools Individual Tournament, with the older of the two having to work hard to take the title.

Older brother Max - a member of the New Zealand Junior Development Squad - eventually came out on top but younger brother Finn showed his skills as he pushed all the way to the end in a three-setter.

The match-up in last month's tournament confirmed the brothers, who both attend Whangarei Boys' High School, are two of Northland's up-and-coming athletes.

They are both also capable cricketers.

Meanwhile, the girls' final proved to be an all Whangarei Girls' High School affair between MacKenzie Johnson and Olivia Brookland.

The showdown was fiercer than the boys' final, with the girls pushing it to a five-setter which was not decided until the final game.

Johnson was the eventual winner after fighting back when Brookland held two separate match points.

On the same day as the Northland Secondary Schools tournament was the Mangakahia Junior Tournament, which boasted 37 entries with players coming from Maungaturoto, Manaia, Whangarei, Kamo, Dargaville, Kerikeri and Mid Western.
