Northland powerlifters have pressed on from their strong performances at the Northland Championships to break more regional records, this time at the North Island Powerlifting Championships in Tauranga.
Led by Kerikeri's Dean Price - with a New Zealand record bench press of 130kg, a Northland record squat of 140kg, anda 165kg deadlift to produce a Northland record 435kg total lift weight - Northland's seven-strong team produced outstanding results.
Dargaville's Jordan Bennett took out first place in the under-24 74kg class with a squat of 135kg, a Northland junior record deadlift of 190kg, and a bench press of 110kg to, like Price, produce a Northland junior record total lift of 435kg.
Bennett was backed up by Whangarei's Lindsey Daysh at the championships last month, with Daysh placing second. Daysh set a Northland record deadlift of 180kg, a squat of 135kg and a bench press of 95kg.
Fellow Whangarei lifter Joseph Whittaker won the open men's 120kg class with a Northland record 265kg squat, a 155kg bench press and 270kg deadlift for a whopping 690kg total.
Placing first in the master men's 60-69 83kg class, Kerikeri's Hugh McKechnie recorded personal best lifts of 95kg in the squat, also a Northland record, a bench press of 92.5kg, and a 145kg deadlift.
Dargaville lifter Hugh Thomson produced a stunning array of lifts. Thomson, lifting in the sub-junior under-19 93kg class, brought home a New Zealand record lift with a 220kg deadlift along with a Northland record with a 162.5kg squat.
Placing first in the master men's 40-49 105kg class, Goodie Metuanooraroa from Matauri Bay had personal best lifts of 217.5kg in the squat, also a Northland record, a bench press of 150kg, and a 200kg deadlift for a Northland record total of 567.5kg.
