Northland's record 77-8 win over Manawatu in round three of the ITM Cup was just the boost the side needed ahead of tomorrow's clash with classic rivals Auckland, at Eden Park.
While the 69-point victory put wind in the team's sails, Northland have tried to keep the win in perspective. They
know Auckland will be a different story altogether to the inconsistent Manawatu side, who started strongly against Northland before flailing in the second half, when the Taniwha began their scoring rampage.
Northland skipper Jared Payne said the prospect of playing Auckland at Eden Park was exciting for his side.
"We had a good win at the weekend but we realise Auckland are a much bigger challenge. Auckland have a big and very good forward pack, and a fast backline ... it will be a much closer game," he said.
While he obviously couldn't give too much away ahead of tomorrow's clash, Payne said Northland had been signing off key problem areas the team had identified.
"We will continue to build on our game - and the free flowing running rugby we have been playing, which has been working well for us."
Northland coaches Bryce Woodward and Blair Larsen have made two changes to last weekend's starting line up. Luke Hamilton comes into start at half back in a straight swap with Rhyan Caine, who is demoted to the bench, while Simon Munro is unavailable due to a groin injury suffered last Sunday. Munro's place goes to Iwi Hauraki, who will make his run on debut for the Taniwha tomorrow, and Western Sharks livewire Mateo Malupo comes onto the bench, which if he gets onto the field, will be his debut first class game for Northland.
Meanwhile, Auckland coach Mark Anscombe has made three changes to his starting line up, giving some players a rest ahead of a tough season.
Pauliasi Manu replaces Tevita Mailau at tighthead, Ash Dixon comes in for Tom McCartney at hooker and Brenton Helleur starts at halfback in place of Toby Morland.
The round four ITM Cup match between Auckland and Northland kicks off at 2.35pm, at Eden Park.
Northland: 1 Matt Wallis, 2 Mikaele Tuu'u, 3 Bronson Murray, 4 Pat O'Connor, 5 Mark Burman, 6 Dean Budd, 7 Dan Pryor, 8 Cameron Eyre, 9 Luke Hamilton, 10 David Holwell, 11 Iwi Hauraki, 12 Aaron Bancroft, 13 Jared Payne (c), 14 Bryce Heem, 15 Lachie Munro. Reserves: 16 Tim Dow, 17 Ross Wright, 18 Roy Griffin, 19 Cam Goodhue, 20 Rhyan Caine, 21 Mateo Malupo, 22 Adam Clarke.
Auckland: 1 Pauliasi Manu, 2 Ash Dixon, 3 Charlie Faumuina, 4 Kurtis Haiu, 5 Andrew Van der Heijden, 6 Onosa'i Auva'a, 7 Daniel Braid (c), 8 Peter Saili, 9 Brenton Helleur, 10 Matt Berquist, 11 Dave Thomas, 12 Jamie Helleur, 13 Ben Atiga, 14 Atieli Pakalani, 15 Brent Ward. Reserves: 16 Tom McCartney, 17 Tevita Mailau, 18 Liaki Moli, 19 Chris Lowrey, 20 Toby Morland, 21 Ash Moeke, 22 Charles Piutau.
