Week three of the preliminary premier netball round produced a surprise result with the eighth-ranked team beating No 4.

Semco Group Onerahi 2's (ranked No 8) defeat of WGHS 1 (ranked No 4) was their first win in the competition.

WGHS 1 were missing a couple of key players including their normal centre and a tall defender. However, WGHS 1's Sharrell Toka played well, filling in at centre, linking both ends of the court.

Shannon George, 15, and Jess Hita, 14, had their work cut out for them against an experienced shooter but still managed some good tips, turnovers and intercepts.

The WGHS 1 team -- won the third quarter by a goal after shortening their passes into their shooters.

All the other quarters went Onerahi 2's way.

For Onerahi 2, Hayley Taylor (goal defence) and Sarah Nicholas (goal keep) combined to get intercepts and rebounds.

Tracey Stewart moved to goal defence and created turnover ball and took intercepts as well as backing up on attack through court.

Sisters Jess Lowe (centre) and Mary Lowe (wing attack) combined well and fed the shooters with skill following good direction from Donna Stratford, player/coach at goal shoot. Stratford was the best of the shooters and positioned herself well and shot consistently.

Dana Antunovich and Sarah Snowden, in their respective time at goal attack, also played well and showed good movement and positioning.

In the other games third-ranked Northland Coastal Development Whangaruru won with ease against Wahine Toa 2 (ranked No 7) 67-25.

Whangaruru dominated the game from start to finish with Sophie Tua working her magic in the second quarter at goal attack.

Tua read the game with precision, feeding high ball into the shooter and shooting with reasonable accuracy.

She also worked hard on defence. Jamie Lee Tito's return to centre in the last quarter opened up the court.

Defenders Liahona Hebden and Reanon Hetaraka Sadler made it extremely difficult for the Wahine Toa 2 shooters. For Wahine Toa 2, Harmony Kingi at centre combined well with Anya Garland (wing attack).

Julie Williams (goal keep) was kept busy the whole game but made some good intercepts against the experienced Whangaruru shooters. Moana Witehira assisted her at goal defence and brought the ball out of defence strongly.

Youngster Sharleece Ross Hill (goal attack) had another strong game against some solid defence.

The match between Active Refrigeration Fideliter 1 (ranked No 1) and Wahine Toa 1 (ranked No 6) was a one-sided game with the Fideliter defence standing out.

Several defence combinations were put on court and all worked well, gaining multiple turnover ball and rebounds.

Wahine Toa 1 was held to 11 goals in the first half and 10 goals in the second, giving Fideliter 1 a big 59-21 win.

The Davis Cooper sisters, Rowena at centre and Jo at wing attack, combined well in the final quarter in mid-court to add speed and control to the game.

Shooters Jess McClintock Maihi and Cassey Rudolph Cooper also shot well, achieving a 90 per cent shooting rate. For Wahine Toa 1, Sharayne Moir and Zara Pineaha worked tirelessly in defence.

Goal attack Kahukura Hau-Peita, 14, did well against experienced and aerial defence and was well supported by Jaelyn Walker.

Semco Group Onerahi 1 (ranked 2) had a big win over Manawanui 1 (ranked 5) 62-32.

For Onerahi 1, Belinda Edwards, Sue-Ann David and Marcie Cooke combined well in defence and rewarded the team with some good ball. Renee Wikaire was welcomed back from injury into the mid-court at wing attack where she played an outstanding game.

Althena Birch and Charlene Dephoff worked well and gained the advantage by using triangle play to get better shooting positions within the circle.

For Manawanui 1, Hayley Thompson, back from injury, in defence proved her strength and versatility against the very experienced Onerahi 1 shooters. Ngaire-Ani Mehana, 15, at centre played hard and hunted for the ball. Sandra Flintoff, when she came on at goal shoot in the third quarter, moved and combined well with Gail Shepherd at goal attack who shot well.
