Whangarei's Caroline Bon said a case of speed wobbles cost her any chance of winning the New South Wales Open in Sydney over the weekend.
Bon shot a sensational 68 in the first round on Friday to trail eventual winner, Sweden's Caroline Hedwall, by just one shot but second and third
round scores of 76 and 75 saw her drop down the field to share 26th place by the end of the tournament.
The 23-year-old vowed to learn from the experience.
"The 68 on Friday got me pretty excited, so I didn't really take the right attitude into Saturday's round but I expect I'll learn from that, it's only my fourth event as a pro after all," she said.
She wasn't aggressive enough on the greens on Saturday to achieve much.
"I hit everything pretty good but I putted everything short. It's hard to make birdies when you are five metres short of the hole."
"I learned lots from Saturday's round and then played much better on Sunday. The score doesn't really tell the full picture, three-over doesn't sound like a good score but it wasn't a bad round and I played quite well."
She was not too disappointed with her 26th, preferring to chalk it up to experience. If she was offered the position before she started, she may have jumped at it as it seems likely it will earn her entry into the Handa Australian Open next weekend.
"They told me they are saving 10 spots in both the open and the masters for all of the rookies, and those who aren't already in the top 40 [ranked players], anyone who's joined the Australian Ladies Professional Golf this year."
Bon is in sixth place among the rookies trying to qualify for the Australian Open and in eighth place for the ANZ Ladies Masters on the Gold Coast, another event co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and Australian Ladies Professional Golf tour.
The final calculations won't be released until later in the week, but it appears Bon has done enough to qualify for both tournaments.
Things are going well for Bon after she earned a limited tour card on the LET in Spain in December and turned professional. She played the final round of the NSW Open with top English golfer Laura Davies, who has won 78 professional tournaments.
"I wasn't really phased by playing with Laura Davies, well after the first few holes anyway, after I'd got used to her bombing her tee shot 70m past my ball," Bon said.
"She's won in every country she's ever played in, which makes her a bit of a legend in the women's game."
Bon earned more than $1500 for her share of 26th place, but she said what she had learned was just as valuable.
"That's what's cool about this, I learn the best when I'm playing under pressure.
"I've only been here for two weeks and I've already played four events so I feel I'm learning quickly and perhaps that's why I shot four-under on Friday.
"Hopefully I can shoot the same score again but now I'm a bit better prepared for what I should do after that so I won't get the wobbles again," she said.
Bon will play in the three-round Royal Canberra Ladies Classic starting on Friday before preparing for the Handa Open.
