* Bateman, Dunn honoured
Congratulations to Anne Bateman and John Dunn who picked up code awards at last Friday night's Sport Northland dinner.
Our sport had a number of other nominees in various categories but these were unsuccessful.
It shows, however, that bowls is right up there when it comes to Northland sport
and it is good to see some of our members getting rewards. * Rep squads named for new season
Men's 1-10 year selector Jim Cook and the 1-5 year selector Bill Burgess have announced their squads for the representative programme later in the season.
The teams are:
1-10 Year Development Squad - Steve Mitchell (Kensington), Joe Thorburn (Kensington), Carl Van Haaften (Kensington), Alistair Trimmer (Kamo), Aaron Van Haaften (Whangarei), Hayden Smith (Whangarei).
1-5 Year Squad - Ross Burrows (Mangawhai), Paul Freeman (Mangawhai), Paul Graham (Whangarei), Ray Holland (Mangawhai), Ivan Pivac (Leigh), Alistair Robertson (Kamo), John Ridling (Kamo), Paul Yovich (Whangarei).
Senior selector Goldie Wardell is keeping his thoughts on the top sides to himself at this stage but an announcement may be expected some time in the New Year.
Meantime those players in contention will have to ensure they maintain their form.
* Locals win Wilson Pairs
Last weekend saw the Dargaville Bowling Club hold its Wilson Pairs.
This was the 60th playing of this event which must make it one of the older events in Northland.
Winners were a local team of Tom Ker and Bryce Wyatt ahead of another local team of Alan Rakich and Max Jones.
Third equal were Sam Nelson and Eric Pattillo from Kensington and Ron Bailey and Geoff Trappitt from Arapohue.
The plate event was won by Marty Webb and Dennis Breckon from Arapohue with Jim Vallance and Mickey Marinkovich from Dargaville second and Peter Russell and John Matich also from Dargaville in third place. From all accounts a good weekend.
*Room for more teams in tourney
The women's umpires tournament is set down for Friday December 9 at Kensington and there is still room for more teams. Contact Shirley Kristensson on 437-3785 or Barbara Craft on 437-1176 to enter.
The men's tournament earlier in the season was very successful so now it is the ladies' turn to support the umpires organisation.
* Entries close Friday for centre fours
At this stage there are just 16 entries in the men's centre fours and 12 entries in the women's event. Entries close this Friday and there must be many more bowlers out there wanting a game.
Get your teams organised and put an entry in promptly.
