Only Whangarei Netball's Premiers play the next two weeks to complete their round robin competition prior to a three-week finals format.
There were some surprises on Friday with both top ranked teams suffering a loss - Semenoff Transport Fideliter 1 were beaten by a harden Electrotrade Manawanui team, 60-56, and Semco Group Onerahi 1 were beaten 44-37, by an inspired WGHS 1 team.
Manawanui put in an entire team effort. Goal attack Judy Campbell did a volume of work on attack, moving well and shooting consistently, while goal defence/goal keep Melanie Leef had another strong game.
In the final quarter she and Danica Matautia at wing defence picked up some crucial intercepts mid-court, assisting Manawanui to nab the win. The final quarter of the game saw 12 goals apiece but Manawanui had built up enough of a buffer to take the win.
Goal defence Kelly Middleton played solidly and consistently For Fideliter 1. Jo Cooper at centre provided good ball through court and goal shoot Nicky Taylor shot at almost 100 per cent, putting up the majority of the shots. WGHS 1 were missing their tall shooter. However this seemed to motivate them and they played an awesome game.
WGHS 1 goal shoot Rose Baker stepped up and shot well as well as gaining good rebounds and turnover ball. Jaimee-Lee Tito at goal defence partnered with Jade Telfer making it hard for Onerahi 1 to get ball into the shooting circle. Jacinta Matson at wing attack/centre had a good game.
The win came from the team utilising any turnover ball gained and putting it into points. Onerahi 1 drew the first quarter and won the final quarter, but it was too little too late. There were too many opportunities for turnover ball for WGHS 1.
The Dive Inn Whangaruru team had a convincing 68-42 win over Takahiwai 1.
Whangaruru led confidently the whole game, winning every quarter. For Whangararu, Tara Wells at centre contested every Takahiwai pass and picked up a lot of turnovers on defence. Wells linked up seamlessly with Harriett Hardy at wing attack. Both players fed the circle accurately and patiently. Takahiwai 1's Amie Pooley played a consistent and strong game at wing attack/wing defence.
The defence combination worked tirelessly but could not break through the Whangaruru shooting combination. When Koea Kaka came on she continued to impress at goal attack.
Old Boys 1 won over Semco Group Onerahi 2, 52-40. Rowena Cooper Davis had another great game at goal attack for Old Boys, relentless on attack and in the circle. On defence, Jude Barber had her normal sterling performance and in mid-court, Eden Cherrington provided speed and pace. Onerahi 2 do not seem able to play consistently. This was not their week and they had a slow start, down 11 goals in the first quarter. However, goal shoot Kylie Wright played well and shot accurately especially later in the game.
At the opposite end of the court, goal keep Catherine Allingham played an outstanding game, getting good tips and rebounds off the shooters.
Caitlin McLean had a strong defensive performance at wing defence and then centre.
