It's not often - in any sport - that we see Northland beat Canterbury.
However, Northland's showjumping team have proved that the smaller provinces can topple the larger.
As a result of their win, Northland were awarded the Saba Sam Shield for their performances in the inter-provincial showjumping teams' competition.
Last month's competition was run over two rounds at the Horse of the Year Show in Hastings, where the top six teams went through to the second round.
Teams making it through to the second round included Northland, Canterbury, Hawke's Bay and Waitemata, who all recorded zero faults after the first round.
However, outstanding riding by all Northland riders saw them snatch the win from Canterbury.
At the same event, Northland achieved the unthinkable by taking out the Pony Club showjumping team event for the second year running.
Northland's pony club team comprised: Sharnaye Lammers on Arrows Flight (Whangarei), Ella Poole-Crowe on Gizbo (Whangarei), Alexa Dodson on Showtym Victori (Bay of Islands), and Alex McKenzie on Ngahiwi Warrior.
