Whangarei Boys' High School had a solid start to the Russ Glackin quadrangular junior tournament, beating Rangitoto College in Auckland.
Batting first against the host team on their grass pitch, WBHS got off to a good start with Sam Clotworthy and Sam Smith-Bell putting on 43 for the first wicket.
The batting then collapsed against the spinners until Milton Brookland briefly halted the slide with a hard-hit 18, which included one big six.
This got the schoolboys past 100 and gave them some hope of defending their score.
Rangitoto lost an early wicket, thanks to an excellent catch by Chris Kokich off Max Trimble's bowling.
Matthew Lobb and Clotworthy then chimed in with three wickets each in short order, and Fletcher Coutts claimed one also, so Rangitoto were always under pressure.
At the 34-over mark, they needed 22 more runs with only two wickets in hand. Returning for their second spells, Trimble and Lobb soon took another wicket each to give Boys' High the win by 15 runs.
Next up for Boys' High is a match against Westlake Boys' High, who easily beat Kelston in Monday's other game.
