After a whirlwind international U19 tri-series in Australia, Whangarei Boys' High student Kurtley Watson now has his eye on the Northern Knights.
The medium-fast bowler was one of New Zealand's best performers in the team's six-match series in Darwin involving India and Australia last month, recording best figures of 4-32against Northern Territory.
Although the Kiwis came third in the series, behind runners-up Australia, Watson's performances with the white ball were something to take heart from.
The trip to Australia was his first tour with the U19 squad and Watson said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
"It was great, the boys really gelled well and we were a tight unit despite the results."
Watson is looking forward to finishing school and pursing higher cricketing honours.
"I'm just keeping my head down, working hard with the Northern (Districts) Academy and I'll see what happens, but I'd like to think I'm good enough for the Knights," he said.
Watson comes from a strong sporting family with his dad having played club rugby league for Takahiwai, and cousin Jason Mackie playing for both the Kiwis and Warriors between 1993-1995.
He only started playing cricket when he was 10, after giving rugby a try.
"I gave rugby a go first but didn't like it so swapped to cricket. My dad is real proud of what I've done so far," Watson said.
His provincial coach Stephen Cunis says Watson has a good head on his shoulders and is destined for bigger things.
"He works really hard and has strong support networks around him," Mr Cunis said.
"He has a great work ethic and is really driven."
Watson will take part in a training camp with the New Zealand U19 squad in Christchurch in nine weeks and should he be selected, he will head to Dubai for next year's ICC U19 World Cup.
