Northland coach Bryce Woodward is warning his troops - and Taniwha fans - to expect plenty of fight from Counties-Manukau in tonight's clash at Okara Park.
He said under-estimating Counties would be a mistake, with the side travelling to Whangarei completely different from the one that featured in last week's round
of the Air New Zealand Cup.
Counties have six key players returning to their starting line-out after falling to their biggest defeat of the season, 19-62, against Wellington.
"Everyone realises how important this game is for us, and Counties are rolling out a few of their big guns for this match.
"So we're expecting a real battle and it certainly won't be lay-down misere," the coach said.
Speedster Lelia Masaga is once again fully fit while captain Tasesa Lavea returns to direct the side from first five-eighth.
The vastly experienced blindside flanker and sevens star, DJ Forbes, will also make a big difference, returning after receiving the all clear after a neck injury.
Number-eight Viliami Fihaki, lock Rees Logan and prop Simon Lemalu also return to the pack, which will help them stiffen their resistance against the Taniwha.
Counties are still understrength, with five more players still on the injury list, but the team has the talent to compete with Northland - as they showed in a pre-season game at Growers Stadium the Taniwha won 10-3, thanks largely to a better second-half performance capped off by a Rene Ranger try.
The visitors will have targeted Northland as a side they can beat after struggling to compete - particularly up front - against some of the bigger sides of the competition.
"They'll be targeting us but we'll be ready for them ... and we feel as though we owe our supporters something after the Otago game.
"We can't respond to that just in Invercargill .
"We have to show our locals, we're prepared to give our heart and soul in a match," Woodward said.
The match marks the half-way point of the Air New Zealand Cup Season and it is doubly important for Northland, with a home win seen as vital, before they travel for their next two matches - against Manawatu and Canterbury respectively.
Northland are able to field a largely unchanged side.
Matt Clutterbuck is still bracketed with Junior Gadolo on the bench, with the open side flanker taking a knock to the head in last week's game against Southland and awaiting a late fitness test to decide his role in the game. Simon Munro is the only change to the starting side that drew with Southland, replacing Brook Gilmore on the wing.
Northland: Jared Payne (captain), Simon Munro, Damian Fakafanua, Derek Carpenter, Rene Ranger, Lachie Munro, Rhyan Caine, Cameron Eyre, Joel McKenty, Roy Griffin, Cam Jowitt, Daniel Goodwin, Karl Haitana, Mikaele Tuu'u, Bronson Murray.
Reserves: Tim Dow, Matt Wallis, Michael Farmer, Matt Clutterbuck/Eroni Gadolo, Luke Hamilton, David Holwell, Jon Elrick.
Counties Manukau: Ahsee Tuala, Lelia Masaga, Seremaia Tagicakibau, Dean Cummins, Sherwin Stowers, Tasesa Lavea (captain), Notise Tauafao, Viliami Fihaki, Mark Selwyn, DJ Forbes, Rees Logan, Alepini Olosoni, Simon Lemalu, Matt Holloway, Graham Dewes.
Reserves: Ilaisa Maasi, Po'aloi Taula, Jamie Chipman, Ryota Asano, August Pulu, Tim Nanai-Williams, David Raikuna.
