A competition among four Northland branches of the 60s-Up movement saw around 50 people battling it out on petanque courts at Kensington on Wednesday.
The 60s-Up movement involves groups of mainly retired people looking to stay active by meeting for events and friendship.
Whangarei 60s-Up member Wally Gallaher said theChallenge Shield was an annual competition played for between the Kamo, Bream Bay, Dargaville and Whangarei branches, which began in 1998.
Each branch entered three teams of four, and the tournament was played out on the field next to the Netball Association rooms, in between a morning tea and lunch put on by Whangarei branch members.
On the petanque court, Whangarei weren't able to retain the shield from last year, with Kamo taking the honours.
Mr Gallaher said petanque was a popular activity for Whangarei members, with around 30 members of their petanque group turning up to the Town Basin every Tuesday to play from 10am-midday.
