Have a Go at Bowls Day is set down for this Saturday, October 6 at various clubs throughout the region. Bowls are supplied, please wear soft-soled shoes, jandals or bare feet. Join us for fun and coffee. Call at one of the following clubs this Saturday: Arapohue 10.30 to 2.30pm; Hikurangi 1.30pm to 3.30pm; Kamo 9am to 12 noon; Kensington 11am to 2pm; Mt Manaia 1.30pm to 4pm; Onerahi 10am to 4pm; One Tree Point 10.30am to 4pm Waipu 10am to 3pm; Whangarei 10am to 1pm.

The Secondary Schools Regional Competition was completed on Sunday at the Onerahi greens. Due to the softness of the natural surface, the pairs section was transferred to Kamo Club on the Saturday.

Four singles players and four-pairs teams qualified to represent the Northern Region 1 in the the NZ finals to be held in Hamilton on the 9-11 December, 2012.

Congratulations to Savanna Lauder of Northland (Singles) and Phoenix Pivac and Tatiana Halkyard-Leef (girls pairs) and Steffan Pakura and Kii Small (boys pairs) of Far North Centre.

Unlucky to miss out was Logan Kopa (Singles) of Northland in the boys section.

The result in the girls and boys singles came down to the last matches of the day and were both watched by a good crowd.

Premier singles Event for Women was also completed at the weekend. Congratulations to Leanne Stewart of the Arapohue Club, runner-up in the event to Elaine McClintock who took out the title for the second time.

Many Northland players took part in the event and the last eight included Diane Strawbridge (Kensington) Leanne Stewart and Marny Jones (Arapohue). Unfortunately for our players they all met one another in the quarter and semi-finals with Marny Jones defeating Diane Strawbridge and then Leanne Stewart defeating Marny Jones to reach the final.

Well done to all who qualified and congratulations to Leanne on her success.

Meanwhile at North Harbour the men were competing for the Ivan Kostanich Singles tournament. Congratulations to Sandy Foy of Dargaville who won the event by defeating Steve Beel of Mt Maunganui in a close final. Other qualifiers were Paul Wightman (Mangawhai) and David Hood (Kerikeri) who was beaten by Beel in the semifinal.

Regional 1-5 Tournament will be played at the Waipu greens this Sunday starting at 9am.

This is the first day of a two-day event, the final being held in March next year. Northland will be represented in both men's and women's divisions. The men will be defending the title they won last year and the women will attempt to improve on their second placing from last season.

Teams from Auckland, North Harbour, Far North and Northland will take part. These players can be the future of the sport and are well worth watching. Good bowling to you all.

A Representative fixture for open and reserve grade teams will be played against Far North at the Maungaturoto greens on Saturday.

Play starts at 9.30am.

Both Centres use this event as a trial for the final selection of their representative teams for the coming season. If you live in the area, come and watch some exciting bowlers in action.

Reminder:

Centre Mixed Pairs final will be played on Sunday at Hikurangi greens starting at 10am. The finalists are Paul & Sue Wightman of Mangawhai and Ken Fitness & Anne Bateman of Hikurangi.
