Bucks tasted revenge for their second-round defeat in Kaitaia with a 71-55 win over Muriwhenua on Saturday in the Te Tai Tokerau senior basketball league.

It was the two teams' second meeting of the competition and Bucks' shooting and rebounding skills proved to be the difference between the two teams, with Jaycin Tini the star for the winning side.

Tini top scored with 31 points and Keziah Lewis was no slouch either as she wracked up 20 points. The Auckland-based duo were unstoppable.

Pipiwai defaulted to the unbeaten Whangaruru Tukaiaia while in the other match Portland Flames defeated Phoenix Takahiwai 72-36.

With well-drilled experience of Jeannie Cameron and Sophy Tua, Portland had a comfortable cushion making the younger players running layup after layup.

With Jaimee-lee Tito's court vision, Leylannie Cameron-Tana penetrated the Takahiwai defence to score 26 points for the team.

In the men's matches Whangaruru continued their unbeaten march at the top.

Manessah Hetaraka-Sadler, who scored 22 points, was well backed up by LJ Hetaraka-Sadler, Tevin Henare, Lattrell Matthews and Toki Hill.

The tough full court press created turnovers and their quickness and speed was the telling factor in Whangaruru's 103-76 win over the Royals. Keeghan Sadler played another outstanding game scoring 29 points.

Muriwhenua's lack of numbers was to cost them dearly in their game against Maunu Lights.

It was a slow start to the game for the visitors, with Muriwhenua having the bare five players to use. But they all put in a gutsy effort to match the Lights shot for shot until halfway through the fourth quarter.

They trailed by just three points 34-37 at the half-time break but in the final quarter the lead blew out a bit more to give the Whangarei side an 83-70 win.

The O'Donnell brothers Atama and Arahi top scoring for Muriwhenua with 21 and 22 points respectively.

Ethan Penney was a live wire for the Lights again, running the lanes well. Penney scored 26 points for Maunu with Hayden Hill and Ruel Gare supporting him with 17 points each.

Portland Blazers got over a slow start to beat City Hawks 112-80 but with the guidance of Raymond Cameron and Corey Tetai they found momentum to get ahead at half-time 50-34.
