Those looking to enter the tourism business may have an opportunity through commercial accommodation, as a motor lodge is for sale in Kerikeri.

The Houhora Chalets Motor Lodge, 125km north of Kerikeri, includes five Swiss-style chalets across 8245sq m of land.

Five are currently leased out to long-term tenants, generating a weekly income of approximately $1000, says Bayleys north salesperson Alan Broadbent.

Resource consent has already been obtained for enlarging and upgrading four chalets and ongoing developments could include the addition of up to 10 more chalets and unit titling the complex, he said.

The 2010 council valuation is $490,000, with annual rates of $2553. The total land area for sale is 8244sq metres.

The property sits directly on the tourist route to Cape Reinga, an attraction which brings in over 120,000 visitors each year and is experiencing annual visitor growth of 5 per cent.

The Far North District Council is also working with Chinese tourism advisor Ziyang (Yang) Liao to realise the significant growth potential in creating tourism partnerships with Asia.

A delegation from China recently visited the area. Meanwhile, Tourism New Zealand is marketing the area as a romantic destination for young Chinese couples.
