A reader from Onerahi comments on the Northern Advocate article Mai defends council pay rises published on 4th September 2014.

Whoa. Let's just hang on a bit here. Our councillors have decided to grant themselves a pay increase because they intend to do a good job and are not in it for monetary gain.

As many of the councillors, including the mayor, were only elected a few months ago how can they ascertain whether they are doing a good job? Besides any employee in any business is there to do a good job and pay rises are given by the employer depending on what he can afford.

As previous councillors have managed to get us unto a near $200 million debt, would it not have been a good idea for the councillors to remain at the status quo and set an example and show that their motives are not monetary and they are serious about reducing that huge deficit.
-Bob Smith, Onerahi
