Youngsters hold own Commonwealth Games

While New Zealand athletes are giving their all in the quest for Commonwealth Games glory, dozens of youngsters from around Northland will be taking part in a very special version of the Commonwealth Games.

To give the event added standing when it's held at ASB Stadium, Kensington tomorrow, former Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sam Warriner will be the official flagbearer.

And if the kids are lucky, Warriner may even show them the silver medal she won in the 2006 games in Melbourne.

Between 120 and 150 children who attend Educare childcare centres around the region will be taking part in their own mini-version of the Commonwealth Games at the stadium. Educare spokeswoman Gillian Kyte was looking forward to the games with several different events on display for the parents and community to watch.

"We have our own discus with bean bags, balloon volleyball, obstacle course and spoon races for children to take part in," said Ms Kyte. "Everyone is rather excited."

Warriner, a triathlete, is known for her success at the 2006 Commonwealth Games where she won a silver medal.

"This is a great way for us to show support for our athletes overseas. The kids can show their support for the games," said Ms Kyte.

"The community gets behind these events and the kids really love them."

The Educare Commonwealth Games will start at 9am at the ASB Stadium.
