Work is underway to haul a logging truck out of roadside bush on a closed Northland road.

Otaika Valley Rd (SH15) - Northland's busiest log truck route - is closed until 3pm today, between Cemetery Rd and the highway junction at Maungatapere .

Work is underway with a crane to lift a logging truck and trailer unit, and logs, out of bush adjacent to Otaika Valley Rd, about 2.5km south of the Maungatapere junction of SH15 and SH14.

The truck's driver survived the 2.45pm crash yesterday, in a sudden, heavy downpour.

Police say speed was not believed to be a factor. The driver had braked, and the truck then slid across the road and flipped.

Today's road closure is expected to put pressure on alternative routes through or past Whangarei to the deepwater port at Marsden Point.
