Work starts on stage two of Kamo shared path

Work has started on the second stage of the Kamo Shared Path.

The $3 million stage, will run from Cross St to Kamo Rd in Kensington and will add to the first stage, which runs from Rust Ave to Cross St.

Stage two will be 2km long, 4m wide and run along the eastern side of the rail line from Cross St to Kamo.

It will feature three intersection upgrades and four railway level crossing upgrades and include lighting, trees, plants, traffic calming at the Manse St, Lupton Ave intersection.

Vehicles will no longer be able to cross the railway line at Wrack St.

The complete 6.5km shared path is being built in four stages. When finished it will connect key facilities such as the University of Auckland campus, the CBD and Kensington Park.

The shared path will provide safe access for over 6000 people living within 500m of the path, and students attending the schools along the way. Students will be encouraged to use the shared path.

The shared path will improve safety for cyclists, walkers and users but also reduce traffic pressure on State Highway One and Kamo Rd.

It is one of the three main routes of the Whangarei shared path network, the other two being from Raumanga to the central city and from Onerahi to the city.

Contractors Broadspectrum, who worked on the first stage, are also doing the second stage.
