A woman broke her leg after the car she was driving swerved into the wrong lane before crashing into a lamp post.

The accident happened on Mill Rd in Whangarei about midday today.

Firefighters used specialist equipment to free her before she was transported to Whangarei Hospital.

Two fire crews from Whangarei, four police cars and a St John ambulance were at the scene.

North-bound traffic was diverted through Mercer St while emergency service personnel attended to the 41-year-old driver.
