Emergency services were called to the train tracks next to Gorrie Rd in Whangarei's Regent at 6.40pm.

A woman has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a train in central Whangarei.

Emergency services were called to the train tracks next to Gorrie Rd in Regent at 6.40pm.

Police closed Gorrie Rd and Cross St for over an hour while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.

The woman who was hit was taken to Whangarei Hospital with critical injuries. The train driver was being supported by police. KiwiRail officials were also at the scene.

Police cars were stationed at the intersection of Bank and Cross streets, as well as on Manse Street where railway crossing alarm bells sounded for over an hour following the incident.

There were some traffic delays in Regent following the incident. Police lifted detours around the scene just before 8pm.
