Whangarei's Blair to captain Kiwis

Whangarei-born Adam Blair has been named Northland's first captain of the Kiwis in 90 years.

The 41-test second rower was announced as the skipper by coach David Kidwell following the axing of former captain Jesse Bromwich due to the Canberra drug scandal.

Blair said he is relishing the chance to lead the Kiwis.

"I'm happy with its all come. I'm excited to be here and honoured to get the opportunity," he said.

"I'm obviously a little bit nervous but pumped for the future and moving forward.

"I've been in talks with Kid (David Kidwell) for a while. Obviously there were a few other boys up for selection as well."

Having been a member of the Kiwis leadership team for several years, Kidwell is confident Blair has the mana, integrity and experience to take the next step in his career.

"Adam's vision and rugby league intelligence has been proven time and time again," he said.

"He is a well-respected core member of our team and has earned the respect of both the coaching staff and his fellow players.

"Adam will steer the team in a positive direction with his actions, courage and mana."

Blair is the first Northland-born Kiwis captain since Bert Avery in 1926-27.
