The Whangarei owner of a therapy dog who needed the public's help to pay for surgery is overwhelmed by the support she has received.

Kambi the therapy dog featured in the Northern Advocate on September 9, needing $6000 to pay for lifesaving surgery to his back legs.

Owner Hannelise Le Lagadec said she was gobsmacked when the Givealittle page reached $6075 in a week.

"When we created the page we were wondering if we would reach our target."

Mrs Le Lagadec said she was touched by people's generosity.

"I'm quite overwhelmed that people are so nice. When I read the notes on the Givealittle page it makes me realise what we're doing is meaningful. It's really heartwarming and we're extremely grateful."

She said it has turned around a heartbreaking situation where she possibly had to decide when to have him put down.

In his role as a therapy dog Kambi is a weekly visitor to the children's ward at Whangarei Hospital. He spends an hour playing with the children and taking their mind off being in hospital.

A few weeks ago it was discovered he had severed the cruciate ligaments in both his back legs.

She said Kambi is recovering nicely from the first surgery. His bandage came off on Monday, and he was supposed to have a cone collar on to make sure he did not lick his stitches but he had been well behaved and so far it had not been needed.

"He is walking fairly nicely on the leg."

She is eager for the specialist surgeon to come back from leave so the second surgery can be organised. The first leg must be fully healed before the second one can be done. Now she can't wait to see Kambi running around enjoying life "and giving love the way he does".
