Two people have been charged in Northland after a search warrant unearthed firearms, ammunition and a large quantity of cannabis, police say.

Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said members of the Whangārei Criminal Investigation Branch had been making inquiries into a family harm matter in the Whangārei suburb of Te Kamo on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have located a bolt-action .22 rifle, a sawn-off shotgun and a range of ammunition,” he said.

Pilmer also alleged a large quantity of cannabis and cash were found.

Pilmer said two occupants at the address were arrested, and various items were seized.

A 46-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman have been jointly charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and a pistol, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of cannabis for supply.

“It’s a great outcome for the wider community that these firearms are no longer in circulation, and the pair charged will now be put before the courts,” Pilmer said.
