Police have executed a search warrant in Whangārei today following reports of a firearms incident on Monday night.

Inquiries are continuing after police were made aware a firearm had been allegedly discharged at a Port Whangārei property.

Whangārei-Kaipara area investigations manager Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said information was received mid-Tuesday about the incident.

Police then carried out a search and forensic examination at Port Whangārei, locating a firearm.

A person also presented to hospital with a minor foot injury.

Another search warrant was executed today at a Kauika Rd property in the Avenues, supported by the Armed Offenders Squad.

A 35-year-old man was taken into custody in relation to unlawful possession of a firearm.

Pilmer said inquiries were ongoing and he wanted to reassure the community that the incident was isolated.
