A van carrying liquor collided with a bridge in Whangārei late this morning, blocking traffic in and out of the suburb of Onerahi and spewing alcohol across the arterial route.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash on Riverside Drive, Abbey Caves, about 11.35am today.

Hato Hone St John said an ambulance and rapid response vehicle were sent, and two patients assessed and treated at the scene.

Police said the crash was still being cleared, with one lane reopening to traffic.

“The van ended up on its side and blocked both lanes of Riverside Drive,” a police spokesperson said.

“It has since been uplifted. Contractors have been advised and will deploy to clear the scene.”

Kia Hawes, who witnessed the crash, told 1News the van hadn’t been speeding before its collision.

“The back wheels of the van started sliding and then it flipped on its side,” she said.

“[My husband] held the door of the van open so someone could climb in and remove the boxes of liquor that the man was buried under.”

She told the outlet the driver appeared to be delivering alcohol for a liquor store in Onerahi.

Dr Shane Reti, MP for Whangārei, shared photos of the crash scene and traffic build-up around the bottom of Onerahi Hill around midday.

“Onerahi Hill care and caution just now,” he wrote.

“Alternating lane opening. Add an hour. Hope everyone safe.”
