Keith Dustin couldn't have found a more fitting gift for his wife on their 65th wedding anniversary.

The 88-year-old Whangarei man learnt a 65th wedding anniversary was known as a blue sapphire, so he bought his wife the ring to match.

"As soon as I saw it, I said 'I'll have it'."

The couple met on New Year's Eve in 1947.

"I looked at this girl, she was so different to any other girl I had ever known at school and I noticed she was looking at me too," he said of that first encounter.

The pair married on January 21, 1953, and went on to have six children - four daughters and two sons. Mr Dustin said they were very proud of their children and their successes.

Their family has expanded to include 11 grandchildren and a growing list of great-grandchildren.

He recounted the couple heading down to Pascoes on Queen St in Auckland to pick out an engagement ring.

Mrs Dustin, who lives in fulltime care at Selwyn Park because she has Alzheimer's disease, was sporting the new ring on her little finger on Sunday.

Mr Dustin, lives in Kensington and visits his wife everyday, except Tuesdays when she goes on a bus trip with the other residents.

The couple, who have known each other for 70 years, have lived in various places around NZ.

They moved to Whangarei in 2013, with Mrs Dustin moving to Selwyn Park in 2016.

"Well I tell everybody I've had a good life. No regrets," Mr Dustin said.

Mrs Dustin, 86, agreed.

"I wouldn't swap you for anyone dear," she tells him.

The couple's two sons, Ross and Ian joined their parents to mark the anniversary on Sunday.

Ross said it was amazing to see his parents reach their 65th anniversary, and joked he didn't know how his mum put up with his dad for so long.

Some of Mrs Dustin's artwork was on display as part of the anniversary celebrations. Usually, Mr Dustin has a display of her work in his lounge.

Ian sang the couple's favourite song - Fascination - a waltz song which was recorded by various artists, including Nat King Cole, and other Frank Sinatra songs to entertain his parents and the other residents on Sunday.
